My Path to CranioSacral Therapy

When I first heard of CranioSacral Therapy, I had no idea what it was or how it could help. I knew I had headaches and back pain, and with the words "cranio" and "sacral" in there, I thought this therapy was worth a shot. While I was working with my craniosacral therapist, I was initially confused because the technique seemed so simple and minimal. I almost fell asleep on the table... which was lovely, BUT I had expected heavy pressure on my knots and muscles. I didn’t understand how something so non-invasive could be effective. However, that night, I slept incredibly well, and I noticed a decrease in tension in my jaw. I felt more relaxed and embodied.

I began CST treatments early in my healing and recovery journey, a time when being embodied and present was somewhat fleeting and rare. Finding a therapy that could help me feel centered and grounded was a gem. I could often find this sensation after a yoga class or talk therapy session, and CST became another pathway to help my body and mind rest and recover.

Movement and communication through the body have been keystones of my life—whether in my dance career, as a yoga teacher, or now in practicing CST. What I love about CST is that it allows me to use my intuition and knowledge of the body to support my clients' journeys. I tune into your Inner Physician—the part of you that intuitively knows how to heal. Accessing your Inner Physician will help you align with your deepest desires.

But what is it?

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach to evaluate and enhance the craniosacral system, which is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. CST is a complementary treatment that releases tension deep in the body to help reduce pain, relieve dysfunction, and improve whole-body health and performance. By facilitating the body's natural and innate healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive healthcare measure due to its ability to bolster resistance to disease.

What is a session like?

Clients rest face-up on a massage table. I recommend wearing loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. I’ll spend a few moments asking questions about what brought you in and what sensations your body is experiencing. Then, I'll begin to tune into your craniosacral rhythm by placing my hands on your feet, legs, torso, and head. Once I sense the cerebrospinal fluid movement, I’ll work through a 10-step process of laying hands on various parts of your body, applying no more pressure than about 5 grams (the weight of a nickel!). Many recipients of CST fall asleep or rest deeply during the session. Sessions typically last 75 minutes.

How do I get started?
